Jared Goff, Quarterback
What has Goff accomplished in his three years at Cal? He has thrown for 8,111 yards in his 26 games on campus, good enough for second all-time in the Cal record books. He is just 15 yards shy of moving into the top spot. Goff has had 14 300-yard passing games. He has 59 career touchdown passes to just 19 interceptions (10 of those picks came during his freshman season). And he is just a junior.
Goff is a different kind of quarterback than what the Texas defense has seen this season. He is a pocket passer. Goff won’t be mistaken for Zaire or Jackson. This is good in one regard because now the defensive line can pin its ears back and rush the passer. Zaire and Jackson’s mobility made the line respect the run, thus limiting the pressure the Longhorns could apply. With Goff setting up shop in the pocket, expect Texas to send the heat.
And it should.
Goff has been sacked 60 times in his career. He went down 32 times in 2013 and 26 in 2014. You can get to him. Texas has the athletes to apply pressure, the question is can the rushers disrupt Goff’s timing before he gets rid of the ball. This is the game that Hassan Ridgeway, Shiro Davis and Desmond Jackson need to find themselves in the Cal backfield. It will be a long day in the secondary if the pass rush is nonexistent.
