More disasters for Texas in the 2022 recruiting class
Just a couple of weeks ahead of the start of the Early Signing Period, new head coach Steve Sarkisian and the 2022 Texas football recruiting class are trying to pull together a solid group down the stretch run. But not everything is going swimmingly for Texas on the recruiting trail of late at a key point of the cycle.
Sark and the Longhorns have missed out on multiple key targets on the recruiting trail of late, and have lost a few key commitments in the 2022 class too. It looks like more bad news key is on the way for the Longhorns on the recruiting trail in the 2022 class.
This bad string of events on the recruiting trail for the Longhorns in the last month started on the week of the regular season finale against the Kansas State Wildcats. Texas initially saw four-star Tyler Legacy running back Jamarion Miller flip his commitment to the Alabama Crimson Tide last week.
Roughly 24 hours later, Texas saw four-star Lewisville wide receiver Armani Winfield de-commit from the 2022 class. It looks like Winfield will be destined to essentially flip his commitment from Texas to the Michigan State Spartans when it’s all said and done.
To cap off a busy weekend of de-commitments last week, Texas also saw three-star linebacker Eoghan Kerry re-open his recruitment.
The good news amid that string of de-commits is the fact that two of them were expected, and losing a three-star linebacker is definitely nothing for the Longhorns to panic over.
The real problem started to emerge for the Longhorns when they started to miss out on key targets in the 2022 class. Texas started out earlier this week by losing out on the elite five-star Frisco-Liberty wide receiver and former Longhorns commit Evan Stewart to the in-state rival Texas A&M Aggies. Stewart was definitely one of the priorities in the 2022 class.

Losing Stewart to the Aggies hurts without a doubt.
And where Texas could’ve made up ground after losing out on the commitments of Winfield and Stewart in the 2022 class is with four-star Klein Cain wide receiver Matthew Golden. Yet, according to a report from 247Sports (paid content), Golden is now off the board for the Longhorns and will be looking elsewhere for his decision in the end.
Golden is likely destined to land with either the Baylor Bears, Houston Cougars, or LSU Tigers when it’s all said and done.
Moreover, Texas continually suffered losses on the recruiting trail at the skill positions this week. As if it wasn’t bad enough to already get the news about missing on Golden and Stewart, Texas got some bad news at the quarterback position too.
Texas wound up missing out on the former USC Trojans commit and the talented four-star Corner Canyon (UT) product Devin Brown to the Ohio State Buckeyes on Dec. 1. After a successful official visit in Columbus last month, Brown quickly swung his interests to pick Ohio State over competing schools such as Texas and the Ole Miss Rebels.
Given the fact that Texas wants to take two quarterbacks in the 2022 class, it was big to miss out on Brown. He was definitely one of the top targets left on the big board for the Longhorns 2022 class at this point of the cycle.
Where Texas goes from here is still pretty clear. Sark and the Longhorns staff can’t afford to miss out on a host of targets, namely those along the offensive line. Five-star interior offensive lineman Devon Campbell and four-star offensive tackle Malik Agbo are definitely two names to watch moving forward.
Texas still sits at 20 commits in the 2022 class a couple of weeks out from the Early Signing Period. But the next 10-14 days are sure to deliver a ton of action on the recruiting trail for Sark and the Longhorns.
