One of the pair of former Longhorns wide receivers that left for SMU by way of the transfer portal so far this offseason is the former blue-chip recruit and redshirt sophomore Kelvontay Dixon. Texas definitely had one of the bigger depth losses of the offseason so far at any of the skill positions with Dixon leaving for the portal post-spring ball.

Dixon is likely going to be able to make an immediate impact on the Mustangs’ offense this coming season. He showed flashes in the last couple of years with the Longhorns, registering 12 catches for 176 receiving yards (14.7 yards per catch) and one receiving touchdown.

It will be worth watching to see the success that Dixon is able to find in his post-Longhorns career.

David Abiara, DE/EDGE

A former Longhorns player that didn’t get any live game snaps in his one year with the program was the former blue-chip recruit and freshman defensive end/edge rusher David Abiara.

As a late addition to the Longhorns 2021 recruiting class, Abiara was figured to be a solid depth piece along the defensive front. And unlike the rest of the new SMU transfers among the former Longhorns on this list, Abiara wasn’t even a Tom Herman-era recruit. Abiara was originally recruited by Pete Kwiatkowski and Bo Davis.

Yet, it looked like Abiara was really facing an uphill battle to even have a shot at getting a key role on the two-deep depth chart in the next few years. Texas has a lot of blue-chip talent along the defensive front, and it just looked like Abiara got lost in the mix this offseason.
