The No. 1 Longhorns are undeniably the No. 1 team in the state of Texas. Over the weekend, the Horns hosted their in-state rivals, the Texas A&M Aggies, in a three-game series and pulled off the improbable sweep to lay claim to the Lone Star Showdown.
All three games were one-run wins for Texas as the Longhorns and head coach Jim Schlossnagle (yes, the very head coach that UT athletic director Chris Del Conte poached from the Aggies last year) won three in a row to improve their record to 37-5 overall.
Tommy Farmer IV was the story of game one as he scored both of Texas's runs. In the bottom of the third inning, Jayden Duplantier doubled to center field and Farmer ran home. Four innings later, Farmer hit his first career home run over left field to put the Horns up 2-0.
In the top of the eighth, the Aggies showed a slight sign of life as third baseman Wyatt Henseler reached first on a fielding error and Ben Royo made it home. However, the singular unearned run wasn't enough as Texas toppled Texas A&M 2-1.
In yet another one-run matchup, the Horns pulled off a 3-2 victory behind a banner game by designated hitter Ethan Mendoza.
Mendoza hit a home run in the bottom of the third inning and then doubled in the seventh to bring Duplantier around to home. During the sixth inning, yet another error by the Aggies, when Jalin Flores stole third base, allowed him to then advance home and Schuessler to advance to second.
In the final game of the series, bats were hot for both teams as they earned a total of 11 runs. However, once again, the Horns edged out the Aggies to earn the series sweep with a 6-5 victory.
Schuessler, Farmer, Duplantier, and left fielder Adrian Rodriguez all scored runs (Rodriguez scoring three of them) to score Texas's sixth runs as Jason Flores, Andre Duplantier II, Ethan Walker, Grayson Saunier, and Max Grubbs combined for the win on the mound.
