Steve Sarkisian watches Horns fall behind rivals in hunt for two-way in-state athlete

It isn't often that the Texas Longhorns and head coach Steve Sarkisian miss out on recruiting targets, especially when it's an in-state prospect.

Yet, that's exactly what is happening with three-star recruit Jaiden Fields, who has grown up just a few minutes north of the Horns' home in Austin.

Fields isn't one of the top prospects in the class of 2027, so he hasn't received a lot of attention from Texas. However, he is a two-way athlete who has earned impressive stats at both wide receiver and strong safety, as well as lining up on special teams.

Because of the lackluster effort from Sarkisian and the Horns, they have watched Fields slip away from their grasp and head toward their rivals.

Jaiden Fields' final schools add insult to injury for Texas

With just a few days until Fields' scheduled commitment date, he has narrowed his list to five programs: the Stanford Cardinal, the TCU Horned Frogs, the SMU Mustangs, the Oklahoma Sooners, and the Texas A&M Aggies.

Fields set his decision day as July 7, and while the Horns are fresh off an elite June, landing 11 commitments from the class of 2027, the fact that he's narrowed his list to so many other in-state programs and Texas rivals rubs a little salt in the wound.

"One of the nation's TOP athletes will choose from Texas A&M, TCU, SMU, Stanford, and Oklahoma next week on July 7," Rivals' Sam Spiegelman reported on X.

Throughout his first two seasons of high school varsity football, Fields has already amassed 2,177 receiving yards for 28 touchdowns. He also has 500 yards between punt and kick returns, and even boasts 21 rushing yards and a touchdown on the ground.

On the defensive side of the ball, he has earned 70 total tackles (32 solo), three tackles for loss, five pass deflections, four fumble recoveries, and two interceptions for 83 yards.

To sum up those last two paragraphs, Fields is a monster on both sides of the ball and would make a great addition to any collegiate roster.

Ultimately, it looks as though Sarkisian decided that there were bigger fish in the pond to go after and chose to pour his effort into other buckets. But it still doesn't feel good to see such a talented athlete, especially one from Hutto, go farther out of town just to play collegiate football.

At the end of the day, the Horns currently have the No. 6 recruiting class of 2027 in the nation, landing them third in the SEC standings. So, Texas will be just fine without Fields on its roster, but wouldn't it be cool if the Longhorns could boast their own version of Travis Hunter?
