In a massive (both metaphorically and literally) recruiting win for Texas, the Longhorns landed a commitment from five-star interior offensive lineman Ismael Camara.

With the commitment, the Horns not only added an incredible amount of talent and size to their future offensive line room, but also took a jump in the national recruiting rankings, moving into the top five and leapfrogging none other than the Oklahoma Sooners.

Breaking into the top five was already pretty sweet, but knocking the Sooners out of the top of the national rankings was even sweeter, handing Texas an off-season win over its biggest rival.

Texas has just 22 commitments from the class of 2027, and OU has 26, but there is one major difference between the two recruiting classes.

Camara was the third five-star prospect to commit to the Longhorns and Steve Sarkisian, joining cornerback John Meredith III and wide receiver Easton Royal. Meanwhile, the Sooners and head coach Brent Venables have landed just one five-star recruit so far: offensive tackle Kaeden Penny.

Of course, it would be great for Texas to land a few more prospects from the class, cementing its place in the top five and possibly matching Oklahoma's current commitment count.

Texas trails just one team in SEC recruiting rankings

Beyond climbing the national rankings, the Horns also climbed the SEC rankings, taking the leap over the Sooners, who joined the conference the same year that Texas did. However, with this jump, the Longhorns only rank second in the SEC, trailing the Texas A&M Aggies, who currently lay claim to the No. 1 recruiting class in the country.

At this point, it is impossible to deny the incredible job that Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko has done on the recruiting trail, landing 25 commitments, including six (yes, 6) five-star prospects.

Class of 2027 team recruiting rankings

  1. Texas A&M Aggies (SEC) - 25 commitments
  2. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (Independent)- 21
  3. Oregon Ducks (B1G) - 24
  4. Miami Hurricanes (ACC)- 20
  5. Texas Longhorns (SEC) - 22
  6. Oklahoma Sooners (SEC) - 26
  7. Ohio State Buckeyes (B1G) - 18
  8. Florida Gators (SEC) - 24
  9. Texas Tech Red Raiders (Big 12) - 17
  10. Michigan Wolverines (B1G) - 20
  11. LSU Tigers (SEC) - 15
  12. USC Trojans (B1G) - 14
  13. Auburn Tigers (SEC) - 25
  14. Ole Miss Rebels (SEC) - 21
  15. Clemson Tigers (ACC) - 24

More likely than not, the Horns will not be able to catch the Aggies in the rankings. Yet, there is at least one more prospect deciding between the two in-state rivals: five-star running back Landen Williams-Callis, as well as a few other blue-chip prospects eying Texas.

There is still a lot of time left until the recruiting process for the class of 2027 is completely finished. However, the recent pickups for the Longhorns and Sarkisian have Texas trending in the exact right direction as more and more top prospects lock in their decisions.
