Ohio State is scheduled to play the Texas Longhorns five years from now in Austin. The year 2022 should also be the next time head coach Urban Meyer says anything about Texas Football.

Coach Meyer embarrassed himself this week with uninformed comments about Texas Football and new head coach Tom Herman, who was offensive coordinator at Ohio State when the Buckeyes won the first-ever College Football Playoff National Title three years ago.

Instead of focusing on his opponent this week, Oklahoma, Coach Meyer wrongfully opined about Herman’s comments following Texas’ opening game loss against Maryland.

Coach Meyer called it a “new generation excuse” to blame players from a previous regime for not winning games.

He went on to say Coach Herman “got a dose of reality; Maryland just scored 51 points on you.”

The reality is that Urban Meyer could not have been more off-base about what Tom Herman actually said.

Urban Meyer Completely Misses Context

Following Texas’ loss against Maryland, Tom Herman commented that it would take more than nine months of training and “sprinkling some pixie dust” on the long-term issues that have plagued Texas Football to create a winning team and culture again.

The context of the comment was trying to manage expectations of fans, media, supporters, and anyone else with a vested interest in Texas Football who is sick of the losing.

Coach Herman knows it will take some time and a wakeup call from another devastating loss to finally turn around the football program. He certainly wanted to win the first game of his Texas head coaching career and of the season, but he also knows that future winning might require more painful reminders.

In no way was Coach Herman dogging the Texas players or saying he wishes he had different players that he could win with. Sure, he’s made the comment about not having a “waiver wire” to go find talent, but that speaks to the Longhorns’ lack of depth at key positions like QB and Tight End, not the quality of available players on his roster.

Somehow, Coach Meyer grossly misinterpreted what Herman said. Or, he got bad intelligence from dubious people, tried to draw up a fake recruiting rivalry targeting the state of Texas, or is just extra sensitive about comments made by coaches that could vaguely be related to the problems he left for Will Muschamp at Florida before heading to Ohio State.

Urban Meyer Should Follow Up With Apology

For whatever reason prompted the comments, Coach Meyer should apologize. He won’t, though, because he’ll stick to his off-base interpretation of what Herman said. But, he should.

To his credit, Tom Herman declined to travel down the road of verbal jousting with Urban Meyer. When asked Thursday about Coach Meyer’s comments, Tom Herman said he’s not concerned about comments from another head coach not affiliated with the Texas program. And, he has to make sure he prepares his team to win a game on Saturday.

Fortunately, there is actual football to be played this weekend to finally move on from Week 1 drama. Longhorns fans just want to taste victory again. Meanwhile, Urban Meyer has bigger things to worry about, like Texas’ Big 12 rival Oklahoma.
